Labor Day: Honoring Those Who Built the Middle Class

Labor Day is more than the unofficial end of summer. It is a day to honor the working people whose determination, sacrifice, and solidarity helped shape the workplace we know today.

The roots of Labor Day go back to the late 1800s, when American workers were fighting for safer workplaces, reasonable hours, fair wages, and the right to have a voice on the job. Workers organized, formed unions, walked picket lines, and stood together—often at great personal and financial cost. Their efforts helped establish Labor Day as a national holiday in 1894.

Many of the protections and benefits we may take for granted today were not simply given to workers. They were won through generations of collective action:

    • The eight-hour workday
    • Overtime pay
    • Paid time off and holidays
    • Safer working conditions
    • Workers' compensation
    • Child-labor protections
    • The right to organize and bargain collectively
    • Better wages and benefits
    • Protections against unfair treatment in the workplace

These improvements came because ordinary working people understood an important truth: when workers stand together, they have a stronger voice.

Today, we benefit from the courage of those who came before us. The wages we earn, the benefits we receive, the safety standards we expect, and the rights we exercise on the job are part of a legacy built by generations of working people and union members.

Labor Day is therefore not just about looking back—it is about recognizing our responsibility to carry that legacy forward.

We honor those who came before us by standing together, protecting what they fought to achieve, and continuing the work of building a better workplace for the generations that come after us.

This Labor Day, we celebrate the worker.

    We remember the struggle.
    We honor the sacrifice.
    We stand together.
    And we keep moving forward.

Happy Labor Day to all our union brothers and sisters!
