  • UNDERSTANDING LOCKER ROOM ASSIGNMENTS
    Updated On: Mar 17, 2023

Locker Rooms and Restrooms are for the most part sex-segregated and have signage that distinguish Men’s, Women’s, or All Gender. Historically at work, we have had separate Men’s and Women’s Locker Rooms, however times are changing, and we are becoming more inclusive of individuals who are gender nonconforming or transgender. You’ve probably seen more and more “All Gender” restrooms in public locations including here at SFO.

To keep up with societal changes that are inclusive of all people we will start seeing changes in our work areas. Some of these changes are State or Local Laws that are enforced by the California Civil Rights Department. The changes include the use the new terms, personal pronouns, and Locker Rooms assignments based on gender identity.

At SFO we will begin to have a mix of genders in our separate Men’s and Women’s Locker Rooms to be inclusive and compliant. I understand that this transition may be difficult to understand and accept. It will take time to adjust. I urge you to be open minded to these new regulations and be empathetic with all co-workers.

For clarity regarding Locker Room use, California Civil Rights Department states “All employees have a right to safe and appropriate restroom and locker room facilities. This includes the right to use a restroom or locker room that corresponds to employee’s gender identity, regardless of the employee’s sex assigned at birth.”

Thanks for your understanding, we are all Union Brothers, Sisters, and Siblings and Local 505 celebrates our diversity and inclusiveness. Please bring any questions to the General Membership Meeting or reach out to the Local with any concerns you may have.
